Volunteer Work "Takeout Cup Campaign"

Entering summer in South Korea, especially in Daegu, which is called 'Dae-frica' because of its hot weather, cold drinks are selling more and more. It means more cups of drink will be thrown away. In this article, I will let you know how to throw the cup. There is another way to dispose trash, but not to put it into the trash bin! Aha!!


Together with '청춘ON도' Voluntary Service (translate: 'Youth-ON-Action'), Korean friends and I have a "Takeout Cup Campaign" at Dongseong-ro, the downtown of Daegu City. We wear a volunteer vest, distribute brochures to public while sharing method for disposing waste of cup. Of course, there are different reactions from the public. Some are receive with open arms, some even approach to us in advance, and some refuse to accept it.

I try to explain the campaign activity to other foreigners. Sorry for my expression!

Whatever it is, I find it so interesting because this is my first experience to have campaign in other country.



So, let's find out what is "Takeout Cup Campaign"!

"Takeout Cup Campaign" started since 2017 in Central Daegu. The Central Daegu District (중구구청) collaborate with designated cafe or coffee shop in some areas to do this campaign. The designated places will get orange stickers, like below picture.

For your information, not only in Central Daegu but also in other places doing this campaign. So, you may to find this orange sticker!

Now, let's take a look at the activity on this campaign!
So, if you buy the drink with takeout cup, you may return the cup in designated cafe or coffee shop near you. Even you did not buy from that cafe, they will receive it. If they don't want, absolutely you may report them!

After it, the cafe will separate the garbage, especially if you have remain drink of your cup. And, the environmental team from Central District will come to take cups in next disposing waste action.

Wouldn't it be the same if we throw cups in the trash? It's pretty same, but at least we could reduce cup garbage on the road, also it stinks from the residue of the drink.
